No influence is so powerful as that of a mother. Our#FeatureFriday athlete this week is Diona Matthews. Another founding member, Diona took much of the season off while she was pregnant with her fifth baby! Sweet baby Dominic is now a happy healthy boy, and mama is back to training, ready to spread her racing wings again at Cane Creek Sprint this September. She is a natural athlete, setting examples to all mothers that you can take time to better yourself through fitness and exercise, and still be there for your kids. Diona takes pride in her roll as a dedicated mother, homeschools her children, and rides like a bat out of hell on the bike. Welcome back, Diona. You are an inspiration to all.

How did you get into Triathlon?
My friend, Cayce Burwell, asked me to join her for the Cane Creek sprint in 2008. I said YES, and fell head over heels for racing.

What is your favorite discipline?
That's tough because I enjoy all three. Love being on my BIKE though!

What is your career highlight?
Being a Mommy! My favorite racing highlight is finally gaining the nerve to compete in open category and reaching the podium.

And biggest challenge?
Training while being a mother and having a newborn.

Favorite local race?
Stumpy Creek International

What is the biggest race day mistake you’ve made that you’ll never forget?
Trying a new mount to bike I had not practiced. Did not repeat that mistake!

What is your one training tool that you couldn’t live without?
Having my oldest daughter to babysit and the YMCA nursery. I thank them both for their hard work and support. Also, indoor cycle training, preferably CompuTrainer.

Recovery regimen?
Water, protein shake, cliff bars, Lots of stretching and SLEEP. Laying off training for a certain amount of days depending on race distance.

Goals for the upcoming year and beyond?
I am praying that I am able to balance motherhood, homeschooling and training well. I would love to complete all three of my racing goals for 2013 and that it will inspire other moms as they have inspired me to keep moving forward.
