How did you get into racing endurance events?

For my 35th birthday, my wife told me to go out and get myself a road bike. This is up in Saratoga Springs, NY, a cycling mecca and my birthday is in the summer so the two went hand in hand. From there, my neighbor (a 2x IMLP finisher) started riding with me and introduced me to Ironman. The rest is history.

If applicable, what is your favorite discipline? Why?

Cycling is my very first love/hate relationship, but swimming has become my most recent favorite. I gotta say though, as I progress in the 3 disciplines, I'm a genuine fan of the triathlon format.

Do you have a favorite local race?

I wish there were more local races to be honest, but I enjoy the Setup events like Lake Logan and Cane Creek. I do also enjoy the Thunder Road marathon very much.

What would you consider your career highlight?

So far, qualifying for Boston (at least I hope I did) at the last Thunder Road felt awesome, but I'm putting a lot of eggs in one basket this year with IMLP in July.

What would you consider your biggest challenge?

I've set my sights very high for IMLP.

What is the biggest race day mistake you've made?

My biggest race day mistake was related to nutrition; I decided to try Infinite with protein during my first Ironman race which happened to be in 100 degree weather.  The lesson learned was that drinking a protein enhanced drink on a hot day during the run is a big mistake.

What is one training tool you couldn't live without?

My family, friends, coaches and anyone else willing to provide advice. I listen to it all. In terms of a "secret weapon," I'd have to say Taekwondo. I practice at WOW Taekwondo in Waxhaw which provides me with 3 indispensable weapons. Physical strength, flexibility and the mental strength to draw upon during very difficult moments in races.

Do you have a strict nutrition/recovery regimen?

I don't, but I know I should. Mike D just today confirmed me that gluten is the enemy. My nickname is HOTBREAD (Pain = Bread, Chaud = Hot) so it will be hard, but I gotta ditch the bread :(

If you have any advice for folks who have yet to begin their endurance racing journey, what would it be?

Scheduling and honesty with your family. If you don't talk about this up front, you'll end up with a lot of anxiety and stress which is not at all good for endurance sports.
