When Mike Crosby is not training for his next endurance race, you will find him coaching his daughter Riley’s soccer team, playing some type of stringed instrument, or preparing a gourmet meal for friends and family (James Beard worthy.)

How did you get into racing endurance events?

I've always been into challenging and pushing myself. I find it very rewarding. I love results, whether the goal is completing an event or placing OA or AG.

What is your favorite discipline?

I love running. Cycling is a very close second, but nothing beats lacing up and hitting the road, sidewalk, track, trails, etc…

Do you have a favorite local race?

We are fortunate to have a number of great road running and triathlon races in our local area, and I enjoy them all. But, I have to say that the Lake Norman Tri is a favorite, mostly because I've competed in it a number of times with my dad.

What would you consider your career highlight?

Completing my first Ironman in sub-12 hours. It exceeded my goals and expectations. Sub-11 is next!!!

What would you consider your biggest challenge?

Becoming a proficient swimmer. My form and technique couldn't be worse. It's like I'm in an MMA fight with the water.

What is the biggest race day mistake you've made?

Not a huge mistake, but a funny one... At Ironman Chattanooga, I hit T1 a little too fast and unzipped my swimskin down to my waist, but forgot to take it all the way off in the tent. About a mile into the bike ride, I figured out the weird noise I was hearing was my swimskin rubbing. I stopped quickly, took it off, and shoved it into the back of my cycling shorts for another 115 miles.

What is one training tool you couldn't live without?

Garmin Vector power meter. Training with power is, without a doubt, a game-changing tool.

Do you have a strict nutrition/recovery regimen?

When it comes to training and racing, I'm pretty specific with my nutrition plan. Outside of that, I'm pretty liberal with what and how much I'll eat, as long as it's relatively clean eating. However, in 2016, I want to focus on body composition, so portioning will be a high priority. As far as recovery, my current favorite tool is my Normatec recovery boots. Whether it's scientific or placebo, they work amazingly for me.

If you have any advice for folks who have yet to begin their endurance racing journey, what would it be?

Don't get overwhelmed by the big distance numbers and comparing them to where you currently are, fitness wise. Find a very conservative training plan and, perhaps, a coach and take things slow. Soon you will realize that you can trust the training. It will get you ready and where you need to be. Make that your mantra- "Trust the training, trust the training..."
