A Florida girl who grew up surrounded by water, finds a new love in the NC mountains.

Heather Fisher

How did you get into racing endurance events?

I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes in 2007 and decided to take control of my health. I got a flyer for Team in Training in the mail and started training for Tri Latta Sprint Triathlon.

If applicable, what is your favorite discipline? Why?

I started swimming competitively at age 4 in Florida. I grew up on an island. I feel like home in the water and love long distance open water swimming!

Do you have a favorite local race?

I love the Lake Logan and Lake Lure triathlons, love the mountains.

What would you consider your career highlight?

Winning my division at the Take Flight Triathlon - awesome feeling on that podium.

What would you consider your biggest challenge?

I race in the Athena category. Athletes come in all shapes and sizes and sometimes I have to get out of my own head and remember to race MY race. I try to remember my favorite quote: Comparison is the thief of joy!

What is the biggest race day mistake you've made?

At my first triathlon I came out of the transition area and the official was waving me down and looking at me funny-- he was pointing and saying "Your helmet is on backwards!"

What is one training tool you couldn't live without?

TYR pro nest goggles. LOVE them.

Do you have a strict nutrition/recovery regimen?

I try to maintain a low-glycemic whole food based diet.

If you have any advice for folks who have yet to begin their endurance racing journey, what would it be?

Train sooner than you think you need to.

Don't put off getting healthy and training or a goal, do it NOW! right where you are, one step, one stroke, one stride at a time.

Performance Therapy
"after each session with Mike Dannenberg,
I walk away with new tools and a better understanding for how I can improve my running form and overall training performance. Not only is he an expert at the ART technique, he's taught me a lot about nutrition and hydration - all of the things needed for great athletic performance on and off the race course!"

Performance Therapy
"I have been going to see Mike and Matt at Performance Therapy for a few months now and all I can say is that they live up to the promise of their name! PERFORMANCE + THERAPY as in I've been experiencing tremendous gains in my endurance sports performance without the debilitating injuries that I have had in the past when pushing my body too hard. Mike has been using ART and other techniques to work on some serious scar tissue in my hamstring, but has also worked on correcting various inefficiencies in my running gait and posture. Matt is my strength coach and has been working with me on my mobility and fostering new movement patterns to correct my bad habits. A well earned 5 star rating for Performance Therapy! Top marks."
