You will find Laura's bright smile and warm heart at most races around Charlotte, as well as in the hallways of the Siskey YMCA. Her dedication to her training and race goals has Laura on her way to a season of personal bests.

How did you get into triathlon?
I began working at the YMCA about 4 years ago. Through a running class, I met a couple of triathletes that welcomed me to train for a half and full marathon with them. After we did the marathon together they encouraged me to get a bike and consider triathlons. My husband was an avid cyclist so it seemed like a logical thing to do. I fell in love with cycling and started swimming with a Masters swim program. My genius friends wink emoticon encouraged me to sign up for Stumpy Creek International as my first triathlon and the rest is history.

Favorite Discipline:
Cycling! Or whatever one I’m showing the most improvement in at that time.

Career Highlight:
Probably Tri Charleston 70.3. It was a PR in that distance and everything seemed to come together that day mentally and physically.

Biggest Challenge:
Keeping a healthy balance between training, work, and life.

Favorite local race:
Lake Norman Sprint, it’s a good course for a great cause and it’s nice to compete locally with friends and family!

Biggest race day mistake that won’t forget:
Not arriving at Tri Latta early! The venue is nice but it makes for slow moving traffic into the park in the morning. I was rushed and couldn’t relax prior to the start. It was the first time I understood why my friends always arrive in the middle of the night with the race organizers.

Training tool you couldn’t live without:
Do Smuckers Uncrustable PB&J sandwiches count as a training tool? I love eating them on the bike!

Do you follow a strict nutrition regime:
While I’d like to say no, I think I do. I’m a creature of habit who packs all of my breakfasts, lunches and snacks for the week on Sundays. I stick to healthy whole foods (non-processed) and keep everything in moderation. However, I love, love, love ice-cream and indulge in it on the weekends.

I honestly follow my coaches instructions on this and I feel that she provides me with a sufficient amount of recovery after races and in the middle of long training blocks.

Goals for upcoming year and beyond:
To continue to improve in all three disciplines. To learn to swim strokes besides freestyle including the b”rest” stroke in the off-season. And I probably should complete 140.6 before I’m 40 years old.

Performance Therapy
"after each session with Mike Dannenberg,
I walk away with new tools and a better understanding for how I can improve my running form and overall training performance. Not only is he an expert at the ART technique, he's taught me a lot about nutrition and hydration - all of the things needed for great athletic performance on and off the race course!"

Performance Therapy
"I have been going to see Mike and Matt at Performance Therapy for a few months now and all I can say is that they live up to the promise of their name! PERFORMANCE + THERAPY as in I've been experiencing tremendous gains in my endurance sports performance without the debilitating injuries that I have had in the past when pushing my body too hard. Mike has been using ART and other techniques to work on some serious scar tissue in my hamstring, but has also worked on correcting various inefficiencies in my running gait and posture. Matt is my strength coach and has been working with me on my mobility and fostering new movement patterns to correct my bad habits. A well earned 5 star rating for Performance Therapy! Top marks."
