Those that have joined Laurie on the bike know to buckle up, Mama don't play.

Laurie Walton

"Of all the rights of women, the greatest is to be a mother." We have many mama-athletes on our team, but this athlete is lucky enough to be teammates WITH her son. Laurie Walton began her journey in triathlon almost 5 years ago to the day. Laurie has had a breakout 2014 season, finishing on the podium in almost every race she has competed in. In 2015, Laurie's Ironman dreams came true as she crossed the Ironman Maryland finish line on a day when conditions were tough.

How did you get into triathlon?
My son Jeremy talked me into doing the Cane Creek Sprint Triathlon in 2009. He can be very persuasive. I bought my first bike (that was too small) and we did our first triathlon together. It turned out to be really fun!

What is your favorite discipline?
Definitely the bike. Sometimes I wake up and think...I get to go ride my bike today! I'm like a little kid.

What is your career highlight?
Doing the Cane Creek Sprint Triathlon in Sept. 2013 with Jeremy and my youngest daughter, Allison. It was a great feeling racing with my children.

And biggest challenge?
Running! This time, I wake up in the morning and I haaavvveee to go run today??? Please, can I just go bike?:)

Favorite local race?
Cane Creek Sprint Triathlon, you already know why.

What is the biggest race day mistake you’ve made that you’ll never forget?
On my most recent race, I failed to read thoroughly the entire email with all my race info on it. I was running late and it made me and my husband very tense trying to get there. I was already a bit on edge and that intensified my edginess. I learned I need to read through the info more than once.

What is your one training tool that you couldn’t live without?
My support team, which consists of my husband and family. My husband is my rock! He supports me emotionally, financially and in every other way possible. If I need something for my training, he does everything in his power to see that I get it. If I want to do a particular race, he encourages me and tells me I can do whatever I set my mind to. He gets me where I need to be on race day, and he gets excited for me, almost as if he were the one racing. I could not do any of this without him, he's an integral part of my training.

Do you have a strict nutrition regimen?
Yes, I only eat things covered in dark chocolate!
Seriously, I really don't. I try to eat healthy as a lifestyle, but I do like my dark chocolate. I do pay closer attention to what I eat when I know I have a race coming up.

Recovery regimen?
I always try to have a protein shake and food within the first 30-60 minutes after training or a race. If it's been particularly intense, an ice bath works wonders!

Goals for the upcoming year and beyond?
To complete my first half ironman in Augusta. After that, I'm hoping that an Ironman might become a reality for me next year. Again that's due to Jeremy's encouragement and being inspired by my teammates.

Performance Therapy
"after each session with Mike Dannenberg,
I walk away with new tools and a better understanding for how I can improve my running form and overall training performance. Not only is he an expert at the ART technique, he's taught me a lot about nutrition and hydration - all of the things needed for great athletic performance on and off the race course!"

Performance Therapy
"I have been going to see Mike and Matt at Performance Therapy for a few months now and all I can say is that they live up to the promise of their name! PERFORMANCE + THERAPY as in I've been experiencing tremendous gains in my endurance sports performance without the debilitating injuries that I have had in the past when pushing my body too hard. Mike has been using ART and other techniques to work on some serious scar tissue in my hamstring, but has also worked on correcting various inefficiencies in my running gait and posture. Matt is my strength coach and has been working with me on my mobility and fostering new movement patterns to correct my bad habits. A well earned 5 star rating for Performance Therapy! Top marks."
